So in Part 2 of Engaged by Brian Solis he takes us through the different levels if you will of Social Media. These include several different social media websites, programs, etc. that people use to connect to one another. He discusses blogs, wikis, profile-type sites, video sharing sites, photo sharing sites, and one that I particularly want to discuss with you... podcasts.
A Podcast is, by Wikipedia definition (which I realize is not a trusted source), a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and often downloaded through web syndication. People download them to their computers and then put them on their mobile devices to listen to them on the go.
My problem is, I don't really see the benefit to podcasting, especially among my age group. I feel like students especially have very little time to sit down and actually pay attention to something that strikes their interest. Nowadays on the way to class, and even driving around people listen to music because they often have a short distance to travel. I'm not going to listen to a 60 minute podcast broken up over ten different six minute walks to class, know what I mean? I guess I just don't feel (personally) that podcasting is something to raise a brow to, because I feel like the people who are "making the biggest impact on the groundswell" are the ones using this technology the least.
JP - great blog. I understand what you mean now (and why you laughed during my presentation the other day) about podcasting. Given the demographic you're referring to - there is no way they would want to listen to a professional development tip on their way to class. BUT...I believe that a senior, getting ready to enter the workforce, and hoping to minimize their time at the bottom of the totem pole, would probably listen to a free, brief, professional development tip if presented in a fun and engaging way. In fact, this senior could record their own by interviewing several leaders of the market they are trying to enter. They could ask these well-known and credible leaders how-to do whatever. Simple shit. Like "how-to introduce others in a professional setting". This is one key area where a young professional could look like winner simply by connecting others in person in a very effective manner. But they don't know how. Who do you introduce first, what do you say, etc. If this young professional could get this local leader on a podcast sharing their experience and tips in an area like this, not only does the YP learn something new; they create a relationship with a leader in the market; they create credibility by being connected "on air" with this leader; and create perceived value in others' eyes in the market. Bam. That's my take on it. I believe that as we begin to enter the age of 25, every person wants to belong to the top 10% of their industry...it's just a matter of who can make it by leveraging the tools at hand in the most effective way possible. Podcasting will be around for awhile, but 60 minute sessions won't strike any chords with Next-Gen crowd. 3 minute tips would be ideal. Any other opinions?
