What Happened to Websites?

Okay so I'm having a little problem in this category of PR & Social Media. I'm not too sure what to talk about, so I may need to ask for some help on topics. But today, we're going to talk about company web sites... what happened to them?

Have you noticed on almost any large company advertisement, no longer do they list their web site like they use to. It's either "Find us on Facebook" or "Follow us on Twitter". I guess if you think about it, it makes sense, though. Why as a business do I want to direct people to mywebsite.com when I can just say hey find "My Business" on Facebook! It's probably easier to remember, and let's face it... because I'm on Facebook I probably have a better chance of getting your view.

My question however is, will websites become pointless? Are they going to become obsolete just like other sites have? I mean Paul Gillin in The New Influences talks about MySpace a lot, showing that the book itself is a little dated. A report showed just recently that Facebook surpassed MySpace in users. So, are .com web sites going to fall by the wayside just like things like MySpace? or Friendster? or ... I can't think of any others. But there are so many addons, inserts, plug-ins and what not on Facebook that you could make your Facebook page just as interactive as a web site... for free.

Seems like a good idea to me. What about you?
