Social Media in the Army

I made the unfortunate mistake this week of trying to read while exercising. I guess I didn't think about how while jogging on an elliptical while reading was going to work, but I did get the jist of a few things.

In Engaged this week Solis wrote about how some areas of the armed forced banned the use of social media web sites because they were afraid they would compromise intimate matters, and how other areas of the armed forces welcomed use of the sites. For the record, I believe I am going to fall on the side of agreeing with those who are banning the use of these sites. If you haven't noticed, in the past ten years we've gone so far in terms of our technology, that I truly do believe that ANYTHING is possible. Giving access to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to those who are in undisclosed locations, could really cause damage down the road to our international security... in my opinion anyway.

Now many people would probably argue that this is the only people are able to connect with their families back home, but what about a few monitored computers that the army would offer that could offer something like skype to be used to talk to families back home. Maybe it's just me, but when I think about the U.S. Army, packing something like a laptop just doesn't come to my mind.
